The first Wrangler, 1986–95: the CJ-7's 93.4-inch wheelbase with a wider track, leaf springs, a lower stance and rectangular headlamps, and the 2.5-litre four and 4.0-litre six from 1991; about 632,000 built in Toledo and Brampton, Ontario.
AMC's replacement for the CJ-7 was designed for on-road manners as much as off-road ability, hence the square lamps that owners never forgave. Chrysler inherited it in 1987. The TJ of 1997 restored the round lamps and added coil springs.
