Every Wrangler has a 17-character VIN. The world manufacturer identifier tells the era: 1JC for the AMC-built YJ of 1987, 1J4 for Chrysler’s Jeeps from 1988 to 2010 (1J8 on some 2005–10 vehicles), and 1C4 for the Chrysler Group and Stellantis JKs and JLs from 2011. [1][2]

Where to find it

Plate on the dash at the base of the windscreen on the driver’s side; the certification label on the driver’s door pillar; on the YJ also on the wiper-motor cover and the frame rail.
