The record
The first Syncros used the 78 PS 1.9-litre Wasserboxer and a ‘4+G’ gearbox with a crawler first. Most rode on the 14-inch wheels of the rear-drive van; from 1987 a 16-inch version with reworked chassis and body, bigger brakes and a rear differential lock as standard raised ground clearance to 246 mm and off-road payload to a tonne — 2,138 of those left Graz by 1992. Only the four-wheel-drive Transporters are in the registry; the later Haldex 4Motion vans have no low range and are out of scope.
