Alter II (1986–96)

Long-wheelbase soft-top and pick-up bodies came in 1989 and a cab and a double cab in 1990; the dashboard was renewed in 1992 and again in 1993. France became the main export market, then Angola and the other Portuguese-speaking African countries, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands. In 1992 Steyr agreed to build and sell UMM’s civil and military models in markets where UMM was not present. Body production stopped in June 1993, Movauto closed that year and Batista Russo of Vendas Novas finished the last series orders; UMM stopped selling to private customers in 1994 and took military and utility orders until 1996. Engines tried in small numbers included a Peugeot 2.0 petrol (1986), the Ford 2.9 V6 (1987) and BMW’s M21 and M51 diesels (1990–92).
