The first Dangel: Henri Dangel’s four-wheel-drive conversion of the Peugeot 504 pick-up and break, developed with Peugeot’s own engineers from a 1976 prototype shown to the company in 1978 and taken into the Peugeot range in 1980 — a transfer case, raised suspension and a driven front axle on the standard car, sold through Peugeot dealers.

Dangel of Sentheim in Alsace had built competition cars since the late 1960s; the 504 conversion became a catalogue Peugeot and started a business that has converted more than 22,000 Peugeots, Citroëns and Fiats since. The 504 4x4s went to French rural services, African fleets and overland travellers.
