The Toledo, Ohio car maker that built the wartime MB and turned it into the civilian Jeep: the CJ-2A of 1945, the CJ-3A, CJ-3B, the first CJ-5 and CJ-6, the M38 and M38A1, the Jeep Station Wagon and Truck and the Forward Control. Kaiser bought it in 1953 and renamed it Kaiser Jeep in 1963.

History

John North Willys took over the Overland Automobile Company in 1908 and built it into the second-largest American car maker of the 1910s. In 1941 Willys-Overland won the standardised quarter-ton contract with the MB and built some 363,000 of them at Toledo; it registered the Jeep trademark in 1950 after a dispute with Bantam. The civilian CJ-2A of 1945 sold to farmers, the CJ-3A and CJ-3B followed, and the M38 and M38A1 kept the Army supplied through Korea. Henry J. Kaiser bought the company in 1953 for $60 million, sold the passenger cars, and ran it as Willys Motors until the Kaiser Jeep name of 1963. Licences went to Hotchkiss, Mahindra, Mitsubishi and others.
