History

White began as the automobile department of the White Sewing Machine Company, finished its first 50 cars in October 1900 and sold to the public from April 1901; 9,122 steam cars were built before the last in January 1911. After the First World War it made trucks only. It ranked 54th among American corporations by the value of its wartime production, and stayed in the top 100 defence contractors through the Vietnam era with the M39, M44, M600 and M602 series. It bought Sterling in 1951, Autocar in 1953, REO in 1957, Diamond T in 1958 and Oliver Farm Equipment in 1960, filed for Chapter 11 on 4 September 1980, and Volvo took most of the assets in 1981.
