History

The workshops at Woburn in the Hutt Valley were completed in 1929 and opened in 1930. When Dunkirk cut off supply from Britain, one of New Zealand's six British Bren carriers was stripped as a pattern and forty copies were built from about January 1941, in steel salvaged from the Port Bowen, aground at Wanganui since 1916. General Motors at Lower Hutt later built welded LP2 carriers from late 1941. The workshops are now KiwiRail's only ones.
