History

Founded in 1945 as Mahindra & Mohammed and renamed in 1948, the company began assembling Willys Jeeps at Mazagaon, Bombay in 1947 and took a full licence for the CJ-3B in 1954; Mahindra Jeeps with Hurricane and later Peugeot and Mahindra diesels served the Indian Army, police, rural taxis and the United Nations for decades. The MM 540 of 1985, the Thar of 2010 and the Roxor of 2018 (sued by FCA in the United States over the Jeep grille) carry the CJ-3B line on. Mahindra is today India’s largest SUV maker.
