The Chicago farm-machinery and truck maker whose Fort Wayne and Springfield plants built the Scout of 1961–80 (532,674) and the Travelall and light-line pick-ups with factory four-wheel drive from 1956 to 1975; it sold its farm business in 1985 and became Navistar.

History

Formed in 1902 from McCormick, Deering and other harvester makers, International Harvester built trucks from 1907 and light trucks and the Travelall from the 1950s, adding factory four-wheel drive in 1956. The Scout of 1961, designed by Ted Ornas at Fort Wayne, was its recreational four-wheel drive and sold 532,674 in three series before the 1979 strike and losses closed the light line on 21 October 1980. The farm equipment went to Tenneco in 1985 and the trucks continued as Navistar; Scout Motors, a Volkswagen company, revived the Scout name in 2022.
