Guy Motors Ltd, Fallings Park, Wolverhampton

Guy built its first military vehicle in 1923 and a rigid-frame six-wheeler with an articulating rear bogie from 1926, supplying the War Office and the Indian government with lorries, gun tractors and, in 1928, more than a hundred armoured cars. The 15-cwt Ant of 1935 led to the four-wheel-drive Quad-Ant, and from 1938 Guy worked on government contracts alone. Its armoured car of 1938 was the first British armoured car with an all-welded hull; Commercial Motor recorded in 1945 that Guy had built 2,137 all-welded hulls for armoured cars, including hulls for the Humber, and 13,305 Army vehicles of all types during the war.

After the war Guy returned to lorries and buses. It went into receivership in 1961 and was bought by Jaguar for £800,000; Jaguar merged into British Motor Holdings in 1966 and that into British Leyland in 1968. British Leyland closed the Fallings Park works in August 1982 with the loss of 740 jobs.
