Bernard Cournil, Aurillac

Bernard Cournil’s garage and works on the Avenue de Prades at Aurillac, which converted Jeeps for farm work and from 1960 built the Tracteur Cournil, about 1,200 of them in the 1960s with fifty staff.

History

Bernard Cournil (1908–1983), born at Le Rouget near Aurillac, ran a wartime gazogène conversion business and a Resistance parachute ground before setting up as a garage at Aurillac. He adapted surplus Jeeps for farmers, took a Willys assembly licence in 1954 and put his own frame under the JA1 in 1960. The firm failed in 1970; his son Alain built 53 more vehicles until 1977, when the rights were sold to Gevarm for France and to UMM of Portugal for the rest of the world.
