The first Jimny: the LJ10 of April 1970, a kei-class 4x4 developed from the HopeStar ON360 that Suzuki bought when Hope Motor Company failed (about 45 had been built), with a 359 cc air-cooled two-stroke twin, a ladder frame, leaf springs and a two-speed transfer case; the LJ20 of 1972, the 539 cc LJ50 of 1975 and the 797 cc four-stroke LJ80 of 1977 followed, the last sold in Europe and Australia as the LJ80 and Stockman.

The record
Suzuki studied a Steyr-Puch Haflinger before buying Hope’s design and turning it into a proper product; nearly 5,000 sold in Japan in the first year, and the kei tax class made it the cheapest four-wheel drive in the country. The LJ80 took the Jimny abroad and established the formula the SJ and later Jimnys kept.
