Patrol 4W60 and 60 series (1951–80)

Nissan’s first four-wheel drive: the 4W60 of 1951, a jeep-like vehicle built for the Japanese police reserve and forestry service, and the 60-series Patrol of 1960–80 with the 4.0-litre P40 six, leaf springs and a two-speed transfer case, in short soft-top, hard-top, long wagon and pick-up forms — the Land Cruiser’s first rival and the beginning of the Patrol line.

The record

The 4W60 came out of the same post-war Japanese requirement that produced the Land Cruiser; the 60 series that replaced it in 1960 sold across Asia, Australia and the Middle East for twenty years and established the Patrol’s reputation for a strong six and a simple chassis. The 160 series replaced it in 1980.

AI rendering impression

An AI rendering impression starts from a 3D model of this vehicle, which an image model then paints into a scene. It is an artist's impression of the type, made to give a feel for the vehicle in its element — not a photograph, and not a record of any particular vehicle.

Proportions, fittings, markings, colours and the setting can all drift from the original in the process. For the vehicle's actual details, rely on the specification, the photographs and the cited sources on this page.
