History
Lawrence Gardner set up as a sewing-machine maker in Hulme, Manchester, about 1868; his sons built gas engines from about 1895 and moved to the Barton Hall Engine Works at Patricroft in 1899. The LW series of road diesels, introduced after a successful bus conversion of 1929, came in four-, five- and six-cylinder forms. Hawker Siddeley bought the business in 1977 and Perkins in 1986, and engine production ended in the mid-1990s.
