The Cologne engine maker founded by Nicolaus Otto and Eugen Langen in 1864, known for air-cooled diesels. As Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz it owned Magirus-Deutz, whose trucks, and the South African SAMIL copies of them, ran on its F6L 913, F6L 413 and F10L 413 engines.

History

Nicolaus Otto and Eugen Langen founded N. A. Otto & Cie on 31 March 1864; Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach worked there in the 1870s. The company traded as Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz AG (KHD) from the Second World War and owned the Magirus truck works at Ulm, which is why the trucks were sold as Magirus-Deutz. Its air-cooled diesels, which cannot freeze or boil over, powered the Magirus-Deutz range, and KHD licensed the 413 series for Soviet production in 1982. The first SAMIL 20, 50 and 100 trucks built in South Africa had its F6L 913 inline six and F6L 413 V6 and F10L 413 V10 until locally made water-cooled engines replaced them. Deutz AG is based at Porz, Cologne.
