Pig (FV1600, 1950s–90s)

The Pig was a 1950s design that found its war twenty years later. It went to the Royal Ulster Constabulary in late 1958 and became the most recognisable British vehicle of the Northern Ireland troubles after the Mk 2 rearmouring of the 1970s added protection and heavy bull bars for breaching barricades. Local variants followed: the Flying Pig with riot screens, the Kremlin Pig with wire screening against rocket-propelled grenades, and the Foaming Pig with a blast-diffusing foam system. British service ran into the early 1990s. Humber built them with Joseph Sankey & Sons of GKN and the Royal Ordnance Factories.

Procedural Mk 1 reference review, 28 September 2026: fresh FV1611 hull with 110-inch shared wheels, six deep radiator louvres, long crowned bonnet, original raised vision shutters and glazed crew screens, early wing lockers, side hatches, twin rear doors and external can cradles. It is unarmed; no later ram bars, Mk 2 armour, police screens or show-vehicle guns. Bronze green follows Ian Young’s Mk 1 walkaround. No spare visible in the selected all-around set, so none invented. All 21 supplied originals plus six Mk 1 walkaround photographs inspected. The Airborne Assault Museum gives overall dimensions and Mk 1 weight; these anchor the model while handling values are game tuning. Elliott’s archival research places production conversions underway in 1959 and nearing completion in 1960; the existing broad 1950s–90s label also includes service life, not continuous manufacture.
