HMMWV M998 series (1984–)

The Humvee: the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, contracted to AM General on 22 March 1983, in production at Mishawaka from April 1984 and in service from 1985, with the 6.2 and later 6.5 Detroit diesel V8s, a 130-inch wheelbase, portal-geared hubs, independent suspension and 16 inches of clearance; about 281,000 have been built in the M998 cargo, M1025 and M1026 armament, M1045 TOW, M996 and M997 ambulance and M1097 heavy versions.

The record

AM General beat Teledyne and Chrysler Defense for the HMMWV contract and replaced the M151 jeep, the M880 pick-up and the M792 ambulance with one chassis; the Gulf War of 1991 made it famous and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars exposed its unarmoured hull, which brought the M1114 and the ECVs. The Oshkosh JLTV replaced it in front-line units from 2016 but the Humvee is expected to serve to at least 2050, and AM General still builds it for export.
