Stalwart (FV620/622, 1960–71)

The amphibian of the FV600 family: 6.36 m long, 8,636 kg empty and 14,224 kg laden, carrying five tonnes across country on independent torsion bars and permanent six-wheel drive through a non-slip differential, and swimming at six to nine knots on vectored water jets. A Rolls-Royce B81 Mk 8B of 220 hp gave 64 km/h and 640 km.

The record

125 Mk 1s (FV620) were delivered between 1963 and 1965 and 956 Mk 2s (FV622, 623 and 624) followed, of which the British Army took 932 and 24 were exported. The Stalwart served from 1963 to 1993. Sweden bought 31, Germany and Austria three each and Italy one, and civil operators ran them in France, Thailand and Britain.
