The Iltis mattered far beyond its own numbers: its four-wheel-drive layout was the basis of Audi’s quattro system, which appeared four years later in 1980 — the same year Freddy Kottulinsky and Gerd Löffelmann won the Paris–Dakar Rally in an Audi-prepared Iltis. Bombardier built it under licence at Valcourt, Quebec, for Canada and Belgium.
