Grand Vitara (1998–2017)

The Grand Vitara of November 1997: a ladder-frame 4x4 with the 2.0 and 2.5 V6 and the long XL-7 of 2001, replaced in 2005 by a unibody with a built-in ladder frame, a longitudinal engine, a two-speed transfer case and a locking centre differential — the last Suzuki soft-roader with a proper low range, built to April 2017 in Japan and exported to 2019.

The Grand Vitara kept low-range gearing when its rivals dropped it, which is why it is in the registry and the 2015 Vitara crossover is not; the 2005 car’s integrated-frame monocoque was a genuine attempt to keep off-road ability in a road-biased class.
