Military half-cab (105 mm Light Gun tractor)
The military 4x4 with the waist-level half cab, evaluated by the Military Vehicles and Engineering Establishment as a tractor for the 105 mm Light Gun and endorsed by the Ministry of Defence sales organisation on 22 August 1979.
A military half-cab 4x4 was shown at the NEC Motor Show in October 1978 straight from the MVEE test course, where it had run cyclic cross-country circuits loaded and towing. The eighteen-month appraisal was paid for by Stonefield and sponsored by the Ministry of Defence's sales organisation to establish the vehicle's suitability as a towing vehicle for the 105 mm Light Gun with a view to overseas sales; the endorsement was given on 22 August 1979. The British Army placed no large order: a minister told the Commons in November 1980 that the Ministry had bought a small number for specific purposes and that its 1-ton Land Rovers would last until the mid-1980s. Interest from Kenya, Malaysia and Greece was reported, and Commercial Motor recorded an order for 12 vehicles from Greece in November 1979.
