The record
Jim McKelvie, who had brought Volvo trucks to Britain, set up Stonefield Developments to build prototypes of a cross-country vehicle for the 1 to 4 ton payload range between the one-ton Land Rover and the four-ton Bedford MK. Norman Watson, designer of the Ailsa bus, drew a space-frame chassis whose side frames rise to waist level, and hand-built prototypes were running by the end of 1974 and the beginning of 1975. The design used bought-in components: Ford and Chrysler engines and automatic gearboxes, Ferguson Formula permanent four-wheel drive with a limited-slip centre differential, and GKN-Salisbury axles. Two cabs were offered, a full cab and a waist-level utility or half cab.
Production began in the former Scottish Aviation factory at Caponacre, Cumnock, opened in February 1977; Hansard dates full-scale production from May 1978. McKelvie died in August 1977 and the Scottish Development Agency took control, but fewer than 100 vehicles had been sold by November 1980 against a break-even estimate of 700 to 900 a year, and a receiver was appointed at the end of July 1980. Gomba Holdings bought the business in March 1981 and built the truck as the Gomba-Stonefield; Cumnock production ended in October 1983 and moved to Strood, Kent.
