The cause was the combination of permanent four-wheel drive, the rotating mass of the Perkins Phaser and front half-shafts of unequal length, which produced torque steer under heavy braking. The dual-circuit vacuum-servo drum brakes were upgraded and the hydraulic actuation made consistent. Reynolds Boughton paid £250,000 of the rectification; the Ministry of Defence about £1.5 million, and £1.7 million more to store the fleet meanwhile.
