History

Sociedad de Fabricación de Automóviles SA was founded in 1969 at Envigado, near Medellín, to assemble Renaults; Toyota joined in the 1990s and SOFASA assembled the Land Cruiser 40 (the medium-wheelbase FJ43 that Colombia favoured) and the 70 Series, and later the Hilux and Prado. Toyota withdrew from SOFASA in 2009 and the plant returned to Renault; Colombian-built Land Cruisers remain common across the Andes.
