History

Founded by the American Benjamin Hotchkiss in 1867 as an armaments firm, Hotchkiss built cars from 1903 and trucks for the French Army. After 1945 it reconditioned Lend-Lease Jeeps and took a Willys licence in 1952 for the JH-101 and, from 1955, the M201, a 24-volt MB with French components that served the Army until the 1980s and the gendarmerie later. Car production ended in 1955 and the company became Hotchkiss-Brandt in 1956, later part of Thomson; the M201 line closed in 1966.
