History

Carden and Loyd had run a large London garage together before setting up at Chertsey to build light tracked vehicles for the Army; they were in business by 1925, when the first one-man tankette appeared, and possibly from 1924. Vickers-Armstrongs bought the company in March 1928 and made Carden its technical director, and later designs carried the Vickers-Carden-Loyd name. The Mark VI tankette went into full production that year; about 450 Carden-Loyd tankettes of all marks were built between 1927 and 1935. Loyd later designed the Loyd Carrier under his own name.
