Ergün Özakat founded the company in 1964 with the British Motor Corporation taking 26 per cent — the name comes from that and not from the British company. Çukurova Holding bought it in 1989; the state's TMSF seized it in 2013; in 2014 it went to a partnership of Ethem Sancak and Talip Öztürk with 51 per cent and the Qatar Armed Forces Industry Committee with 49. BMC has built more than 400,000 vehicles and exports to over 80 countries. It also builds the Altay main battle tank, of which 250 are planned, and BMC Power won the tender to make the tank's 1,500 hp engine.
