History

AvtoVAZ was built with Fiat in the 1960s to make the 2101 and designed the Niva in-house for Soviet rural work; the Niva was exported widely in the 1980s, gained the 1.7 engine in 1993 and the five-door body in 1995, and outlived every contemporary. The GM–AvtoVAZ venture built the Chevrolet Niva from 2002 until AvtoVAZ took it back in 2019.
