ARO’s own design, drawn from the ground up and launched in 1969, mass produced from 1972 and built until 2006: a 2,350 mm-wheelbase ladder-frame four-wheel drive sold as a two- or four-door soft top (240, 241), a three-door van (243), a five-door station wagon with five or seven seats (244, 246) and a range of pick-ups (242, 320, 324, 330).

The record
The 24 Series carried ARO through the export years, when about nine-tenths of the works’ output went abroad to some 110 countries. It was also the basis of every licensed version: Portaro in Portugal from 1975, Hisparo in Spain from 1980, ACM in Italy with Volkswagen engines, and the Cross Lander 244X built in Brazil from 2002. Engines came from wherever the market wanted them — ARO’s own 2.5 and 3.0 petrol fours, Toyota, Chrysler, Ford and Cosworth petrol units, and diesels from Andoria, Peugeot, VM Motori, Toyota, UTB and ARO itself.
