Scorpion (FV101 CVR(T), 1973–)

The tracked reconnaissance vehicle Alvis built at Coventry from 1973: 8.074 tonnes, three crew, a 76 mm L23A1 gun firing six rounds a minute and a coaxial 7.62 mm, a Jaguar J60 petrol engine — later Cummins and Perkins diesels — 72.5 km/h and 756 km of range. About 3,000 were built, 1,500 for Britain and about 1,500 exported.

The record

The Scorpion is the base of the CVR(T) family: the Scimitar with a 30 mm cannon, the Spartan personnel carrier, the Samaritan ambulance, the Sultan command vehicle, the Samson recovery vehicle and the Striker missile carrier. It fought in the Falklands, the Gulf and the Iran–Iraq war, left British service in 1994 and still serves in more than twenty countries. It held the Guinness record for the fastest production tank at 82.23 km/h, set at QinetiQ’s test track in 2002.
