Land Rover Series IIA chassis numbers

From the Series IIA the year left the chassis number. A IIA number is three digits for the model and market, a five-digit serial, and a suffix letter that records design changes; the letter dates a vehicle only roughly, by the changes listed on the right. [1][2][3]

How to read it

1962–71eight digits + suffix letter
First three digits = model and specification (241–258 and 260–324 = Series IIA 88 and 109; 340–354 = later Series IIA 109; 5424 = 88 station wagon, US market); last five digits = serial from 00001. The suffix letter marks design modifications, not the year: A from the October 1961 introduction (lower-case until March 1963), B from March 1963 (shorter full-flow oil filter, redesigned lamps, 9/16-inch shackle pins, larger propshaft joints, stronger axles), C from April 1966 (strengthened layshaft, centre horn push), D from April–May 1967 (negative earth, the six-cylinder model), E from March 1968 (lip oil seals, timing pointer), and on through F, G and H. The Land Rover FAQ's suffix table dates each change by its Service Newsletter.
