The Army needed more Jeeps than Willys could build, and in November 1941 Ford took a contract to build the MB to Willys’s drawings as the GPW (G for government, P for 80-inch wheelbase, W for the Willys engine design). Ford built the Go Devil engine under licence and stamped an F on most parts. Production ran at Dearborn, Louisville, Dallas, Richmond and Chester; the GPW was mechanically interchangeable with the MB and served everywhere it did.
