Design ran from 1970 to 1977 and the Renault prototype was chosen in May 1974; the vehicle entered service in 1979 and around 5,000 were built. The French Army uses only the four-wheeled version and exports are mostly 6×6, which costs about ten per cent more. Adding MEXAS composite armour takes the weight past the point where it will swim. It had been exported to more than forty countries by 2019, and Mack Defense builds the American versions.
